Law and Order

He's a bobby. She is the most organised person in the whole of South Manchester.  Law and Order.  Clever.

Order had met me in The Met.  I'd just had a baby.  I was holding it together.  Just.  She was kind.  She was patient.  We talked blooms.  We worked out the best way forward for a DIY and 'but I'm not confident with that bit' combo.

There was a class.  There was cake.  They brought Veuve.  They also brought copper beech.  And a six foot branch.  And many, many, many, many jam jars.  They had a lesson, we created tablecentres.  In the studio I created the bouquets. We wrapped birch bark round the bouquet.  I have wrapped birch bark round many things over the years. Oh my.

The sun was a shining.  The venue had a herb garden.  (The herb garden bit was probably more exciting to me than most.)  There was a hound.  The hound did not attend the wedding.  It belonged to the owners Daughter-In-Law.  This has nothing to do with the flowers, but it is great scene setting stuff.  I think the hound was a Spaniel.  I'm not good on hound breeds.

They got married. There was a Pettibone dress. There were blue Nigella in the mix. It was always going to be a good'un.

Here it is.  Law and Order.

Classes For the Florally Curious 2013

It's high time that we published our list for our Classes For the Florally Curious.

Florally Curious beginners are most welcome. If you've been before, you're most welcome too.   You know the form.  Newbies will soon figure out how it all comes together.

We used to name the classes, but this year I'll be designing classes as I go along.  Expect seasonal flowers and lots of colour.  Unusual containers are a recurrent theme.  I'm toying with the idea of bean cans. I'll see.

Sometimes we use Oasis, sometimes we don't.  Occassionally there's more containers than flowers.  That's because we look at styling.  Sometimes there's no containers at all.  That's just the way it is.

Here's the list, with a few hints at what joys may come your way.
Thursday 7th November 2013.  Working with pure white.
Thursday 21 November 2013.  Classic designs.
Thursday 5th December 2013. Wreath making.  There will be large bows.  Class subject to change.  We're waiting on news of the Burton Road lights being switched on.
Thursday 12th December 2013.  Another wreath making.  Bows are de rigeur. We're going to have to move this to another date.  Most likely Wednesday 11 December.
Thursday 23 January 2014. Inspired by the bare branches of winter.
Thursday 27 February 2014.  I love thee. Flowers.  And chocolate.
Thursday 27 March 2014.  Think scented spring.

They will be taking place at the home of all things cakey, 'And the Dish Ran Away with the Spoon', Burton Road, West Didsbury, Manchester.

£35* for a two hour floral class starting at 6.30pm including tea or coffee, cakes and blooms. *Christmas Classes are £40 and start at 6.15pm.  Usually, all classes are finished by 8.15pm so that we can all be tucked up with a cocoa by 9pm.  Rock and floral roll.

Recruiting - Florist and Studio Coodinator

We are recruiting.

Here's a brief overview.

We are looking to recruit a Florist and Studio Coordinator to be part of the team. It is a vital role as it is to continue maternity cover for the Company Director until her return, and ideally beyond this time. As such we are looking for:
  • A reliable person with a can do attitude
  • A person with a good dose of common sense and the ability to take the initiative
  • A happy team player who has the capability to work alone
  • Passionate, honest and a heart of gold
Floristry skills are a must and the role will include:
  • Taking delivery of and conditioning flowers
  • Floristry skills related to full preparation for weddings and events to a specified brief
  • Coordinating the delivery of weddings and events and occasionally, smaller contracts on time and to order
  • Operationally taking responsibility for ensuring that the weddings and events are delivered to a high standard
  •  Collecting glassware and vaseware from site following a wedding, event or smaller contract
  •  ......and all the things in between such as studio housekeeping, stock checking and good old fashioned cleaning and tidying.
The potential for the role to include a Social Media element is there, but not vital.

If you think that you might fit the bill, please contact us directly (available on our website) for a Job and Person Specification.

We are after the right people to join our team so if you think that you have the experience but limited hours, or all the hours, but not the experience (floristry experience is a must!) then get in touch.

For the full JD, email laura@lauracolemanflowers.co.uk and we'll email it across.  Any questions, feel free to get in touch.

Anne Geddes

Anyone remember her?  90's.  Peach jeans were in.  They've come back round I believe.

One day I shall show you a picture of our baby girl who I carried for nine months and brought into the World in August 2012. I will naturally style the photo to reflect that she is a florists daughter.  This gives us options.

Option A - Anne Geddes style.  Baby dressed as a flower sat in a flower.
Option B - In a flowerpot.
Option C - Wiring buttonholes.  We have to wait 16 years for this option.

Votes on a postcard please.

Blog updating will resume shortly.  In the meantime, you'll have to have a nosey at what's here.  This is useful is you're planning a spring wedding.  That was the last time I updated it.  Bad blogger.

Blue, red. Whatever. This wedding was perfect purple.

OK, so the Groom would say it has to be red this season. I have no idea. The weekly updates on whether it's going to be red or blue are beyond what my mental arithmetic on points, games in hand (whatever that means) and goal difference mathematics can muster.

I'm not from Manchester originally. I have no allegiance to the blues nor the reds. If I had to say there is a family loyalty to any team. It would be Swindon Town FC I suppose. You can see my passion is with flowers.

So, as promised. Here is a few pictures from a purple wedding. I thought I'd keep it neutral. Colour wheel combinations and all that.

Such a beautiful day. Sun shone. Team out in force. Delphinium. Lilac. Tulips. Roses. Many, many others.  All at St John's Church in lovely Chorlton and then at Great John Street Hotel, Manchester.

One of my favourite flowers featured.  Lilac.  In all manor of shades.  Also, one can't forget the tuberose.  It's scented.  One can't go wrong with scented.

Afternoon Tea and the blooms. A new story in the book of Laura Coleman Flowers

For this one, I didn't need to do the writing.  It's all there in the pic.

Was it raining when this picture was taken?  There's a 50/50 chance you'll get it right.  Guesses in the comments box please.
